Trip Report

There isn’t much I can say about Prairie Mountain that hasn’t ready been said – it’s an extremely popular hike. This post is mostly only to serve as a baseline for comparing stats with my other trip reports, for use in planning other trips. For those looking to tackle Prairie Mountain, the thorough write-up provided by Explor8ion nicely covers everything.

We were in Calgary the previous evening for a friend’s wedding and fully enjoyed ourselves. We elected not to tackle anything ambitious the next morning and instead took in the local attraction of Prairie Mountain. As of Nov 2021 there were a couple of icy inclines where microspikes helped, but it was very easy otherwise. It looks like stairs were built in 2023 which will make the inclines easier, but a traction aid is still common-sense for hiking in winter.

We reached the peak in 1 hr 20 min, pleased with views over Nihahi Ridge and Compression Ridge.

We hiked back out to the road, reaching our vehicle in 2 hrs 30 min. Honestly, my cheeks were a bit sore from smiling at so many people. It’s an extremely popular hike!
